My Auntie has given me a task.
Chet and Dorrie Shelden. Taken sometime in the mid 1980s.
The memories of these fine people who I miss so terribly makes it bittersweet. What an honor it is to have known them, been loved by them and be a part of a family who is so loving - in part because of them.
The task is to recreate the pattern for these :
It will be great to actually make some stockings in this pattern to help keep them in our hearts and minds. Now if I could just stop crying long enough to actually see the stitches...

So awesome you had them!!! :O)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet endeavor. May be very cathartic, too? Can't wait to see how they turn out.
ReplyDeleteMy mom made those kind for me and my brother when we were kids. She also made them for Simon and Linnaea and David and, I assume, for my brother's kids and for my stop-sisters and their kids. She bought kits. I know because there were reasons why the decorations were different for Simon and for Linnaea. Linnaea's had less stuff and she was sad. I found this pattern on-line. You'd just have to fill in the decorations and the names. This pattern has that laid out.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice way to make their memory physical. And I totally understand. I love my Christmas stocking.
Oh, and I made my first pair of socks. I'm now doing a toe-up pair for Linnaea. Thanks for being that inspiration for me.
Thanks, friends!
ReplyDeleteSchuyler, thanks for the links!
I really like the pattern they used for these - with the name in the cuff, and it's doubled there...so fun. I was thinking of making it toe up! It would be fun to do...and maybe even easier. Either way, it will be fun!
I'm thrilled you are working on socks! I love them...
Squeeze the fam for me!
I miss my nana sooo much. What a nice way for you to pay tribute to your family. My nana loved gardens, so I guess that's why I love them so much, they remind me of her, especially English gardens.... Those stockings will truly be treasured. : )
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE these, but mostly I love the sentiment. We didn't have any holiday traditions so we've been creating some of our own to (hopefully) pass down. I taught the boys to sew on the machine a few years back and we all made our Christmas stockings. We had so much fun and they all came out so cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. I sure miss my sweet granny too. xo
My brother and I have stockings similar to those! I still have mine, and I bet my brother does too--he's not far from you I think, in Burbank. I think the pattern was from an old Good Housekeeping but I could be wrong. My grandmother made them for us. I miss her a lot. :( I'll ask my mom if she knows where the pattern was from.
